BRANCH PROGRAMS for 2018 – 2019

Topic:  AAUW grant recipient Jamila Trimuel will speak about the organization she launched in 2011 called “Ladies of Virtue,” whose mission is to “instill purpose, passion and perseverance in girls, ages 9 to 18, while preparing them for college, careers, and to become change agents in their communities.” The ultimate goal is for the girls to become confident and purpose-driven leaders. Members of our Deerfield Area Branch met Jamila at last year’s Fall AAUW Conference and were impressed with her program. 60th Branch Anniversary cake and refreshments will be served.

Presenter: Judge Wallace B. Dunn (retired)
Topic: Voting for Judges and Why it Matters
Co-sponsored with the Deerfield League of Women Voters, Judge Wallace B. Dunn (retired) will speak about Voting for Judges and Why It Matters, including the different types of judges and courts, elected and appointed judges, and how to get information about judges that are elected. With less than a month before the Midterm Election, this timely program will inform all voters.

Presenter: Ilene Berns-Zare, PsyD, MS, ACC, CMC
Topic: Navigating the Second Half of Life
Life and work coach Ilene Berns-Zare, PsyD, MS, ACC, CMC will present thought-provoking research on “Navigating the Second Half of Life.” The program will include studies showing the best ways to optimize happiness and fulfillment later in life. Attendees will break into small groups to facilitate discussion and personal learning.

Topic: Women’s Issues in Lake County
Lake County State’s Attorney Mike Nerheim has agreed to speak on Women’s Issues in Lake County: women suffering from domestic violence, mental health and legal issues. Co-sponsored with the Deerfield League of Women Voters.

The Deerfield Area Branch members’ annual Potluck Dinner with delicious homemade dishes, warm conversation, and woodwind quintet entertainment performed by colleagues of Karen Dessent.
