BRANCH PROGRAMS for 2017 – 2018

Sept. 11 – Tuesday, 7:00p.m.
Location: Patty Turner Senior Center, 375 Elm St., Deerfield, IL
Topic:  What the Deerfield Water Reclamation Facility is, What it Does, and Where We are Headed
Presenter: Brandon Janes, Water Reclamation Facility Superintendent for the Village of Deerfield. He will show slides on the processes that wastewater goes through to meet the federal and state requirements that the treatment plant is designed to meet.The discussion will be on what the Deerfield Water Reclamation Facility is, what it does, and where we are headed. The Water Reclamation Facility treats and processes all sewage from the Village of Deerfield, as well as sewage from a section of the Village of Bannockburn and a small portion from the City of Highland Park.
The Village of Deerfield has completed construction of a new Water Reclamation Facility, which treats 2 – 3 million gallons per day on average and has the capacity to treat up to 9.2 million gallons per day.

Topic:  Equip Underserved Youth with Workforce and Life Skills – Young Women at Curt’s Cafe in Evanston on Dempster
Presenter: Representatives from Curt’s Cafe Will speak and Present a Video About Their Mission to equip under served Youth with workforce and life skills through restaurant training, counseling, mentoring, tutoring, career coaching and job placement. Curt’s Cafe operates two facilities in Evanston and is proposing a new location in Highland Park to help Lake County at risk youth.

Nov. 14 – Tuesday, 7:00p.m.
Topic: The Challenges of International Trans Border Water Systems
Location: Patty Turner Senior Center, 375 Elm St., Deerfield, IL
Presenter: Dr. Rachel Havrelock of the UIC Freshwater Lab, Associate Professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago addresses the Challenges of international Trans border water systems, jointly sponsored by League of Women Voters. Dr. Rachel Havrelock of the UIC Freshwater Lab discusses the wonders and concerns of living on the shores of one of the world’s most viable sources of fresh water. She is author of River Jordan: The Mythology of a Dividing Line (University of Chicago Press, 2011). After writing about how the conflicted borders of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict formed and congealed in Palestinian and Israeli cultures for River Jordan, Rachel became invested in water sharing as an approach to Middle East peacemaking. In addition to the Middle East, Rachel’s work addresses the Great Lakes as a trans-border water system both abundant and imperiled.
